Comprehensive Prenatal Care
The Complete Women’s Practice offers comprehensive prenatal care for expectant mothers. During your visits, we will make sure you and your baby are healthy. Dr. Cova will also discuss lifestyle changes that can make your pregnancy healthier and smoother. At CWP, we strive to provide a full range of women’s health and wellness services, including prenatal and obstetrical care.
After the initial visit, we recommend that you return every 4 to 6 weeks in the first 28 weeks. You should return every 2 to 3 weeks from weeks 28 to 35. And you should come in every week from the 36th week until delivery.
During your pregnancy, you may need or desire additional tests, including:
- Ultrasound
- Amniocentesis
- Biophysical profile
- Multiple marker screening
- First trimester chromosomal abnormality screening
- Chorionic villus sampling
Ultrasound
An ultrasound creates an image of the developing fetus within the uterus. Ultrasound may be performed early in your pregnancy to:
- Confirm gestational age
- Establish whether a normal pregnancy is present
- Determine fetal heartbeat
- Identify cases of multiple gestations
Later in your pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to:
- Look for any developmental or other problems in the fetus
- Determine the gender of the fetus
- Measure the size, growth, and position of the fetus
- Check for abnormalities of the placenta, uterus, or amniotic fluid
Labor and Delivery
Dr. Cova currently provides care at Kettering, Southview, and Miami Valley Hospitals. Childbirth is one of the most memorable and rewarding events of a couple’s life. Each experience is an intimate and unique celebration of life. You will be well-informed and supported by an experienced and caring medical team every step of the way.
Cesarean Delivery
Cesarean delivery is a procedure in which a baby is surgically removed from your uterus. In this procedure, your abdominal and uterine walls are divided to extract the baby.
Testing and Screening
While pregnant, you should undergo routine lab tests. These tests can help Dr. Cova detect possible problems with your health and your baby’s health. Early in pregnancy, we will obtain samples from your blood, urine, and cervix. You also will be tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
As part of your total prenatal wellness experience, we administer the following blood tests throughout your pregnancy:
- Blood type and antigen
- Hematocrit and hemoglobin
- Glucose
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Syphilis
- HIV
We check your urine at each prenatal visit to determine sugar and protein levels. A cervical Pap test may be done to check for precancerous changes of the cervix. In addition, we screen for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Later, you will be tested for group B streptococcus.
For your peace of mind, we also offer screening for potential birth defects and chromosomal abnormalities, including:
- Neural tube defects
- Down’s Syndrome
- Trisomy 21
- Trisomy 18
If there is are potential abnormal test results, genetic counseling and referral to a perinatologists are made for possible amniocentesis.
