Historically tubal sterilization has been performed in the operating room using a laparoscope and burning the mid portion of the fallopian tube. This would require at least 2 incisions and general anesthesia with the same risk. Fortunately, it can now be performed at The Complete Women’s Practice in less than an hour. As and Essure-certified doctor, Dr. Cova will slide the small, soft inserts through the natural pathways of your vagina and cervix into your fallopian tubes, so no surgery or incision is required. The inserts are made to confirm to the shape of your fallopian tubes while remaining securely in place.

Over the next three months, your body will work with the Essure inserts to form a natural barrier within each of your fallopian tubes. These barriers prevent sperm from reaching the eggs so that pregnancy cannot occur. You will need to continue another form of birth control during this three month timeframe. After the three months, it’s time for your Essure Confirmation Test. Once you receive verification, you can rely on Essure for permanent birth control.

Essure is covered by most insurance providers. If performed in the office, payment is often as low as your copay.
